Frequently Asked Questions about Heating and Air Conditioning
What is a Split System?
“Split System” is installer slang for a unit that is used in two parts – one being the “indoor” and one being the “outdoor”. The indoor is the part that produces the refrigerated air whether it is cold or hot, depending on what the user has set it to. There are a number of different designs, the most common of which is a unit being mounted high up on a wall.
How does Evaporative Cooling work?
Evaporative Cooling works on air velocity. The large unit on the roof takes in air through four pads that have water running through them and disperses the air through a series of ducts which flows into your home. The downside of Evaporative Cooling is that you must have some kind of relief for the huge amount of air coming into your home. This can be achieved by opening windows and utilising fly-wire screen doors.
Evaporative Cooling vs. Refrigerated Cooling
This is one of the hardest questions to answer in terms of what you want out of your air-conditioning, as it solely depends on your preference. If you are someone who needs that ice-chill effect during summer, then Refrigerated Cooling is for you. If you are someone who can deal with a little more heat but just need the edge taken off, then Evaporative Cooling may be more suitable.
Why do you not have pricing on your website?
Providing a set price on our website is not something we ever considered as every home is different and every customer’s needs are different. It can be misleading, somewhat inaccurate, and can often result in extra’s having to be added onto the price. For these reasons we prefer quoting all of our clients personally to ensure accuracy across the board.
Why should I use Alpha Air?

What is duct / duct work?
Many different terms are used for duct-work, including “pipe”, “sleeve” and “spiral”. The duct is the part used to guide air to its destination from the unit. It consists of the internal duct as the main conduit, which is then insulated on the outside to retain temperatures as the air passes through. The outside of the duct is protected by a sleeve (either plastic or metallic material). It comes in many grades and diameters.
